Canada and WWI

Canada was said to become a nation during WWI, despite becoming a country in 1867.  Give one or two reasons why you think this statement has been said.

  1. Canada became a nation during WW1 as this was their first debut in representing themselves as an individual country in war by coming to Britain's aid during the war and as well, during the making and signing of the Treaty of Versailles where they sat at the table representing themselves and argued their own case for their needs as a newly independent country. Canada's independence and eagerness to hold their own and come to the aids of their allies changed them from a country to a nation. Abby Ellis

  2. Even though Canada fought along side Britain because they were still intertwined with them, Canada showed there strength and independence in battle carrying out some of the most courageous victories like the battle of Vimy ridge making a name for themselves and standing out as a power for independence - piper

  3. I think the root of it stemmed from the fact that during the war, Canada really united as a country, everyone was pitching in to help out. Alot of young men banded together to help fight. All this help create a deep sense of Nationalism. - Nathan S.

  4. 1. Canada was very eager to help out in WW1. Canada's population was 8 million, but 630 000 people, men and women, served in the war. This showed other countries and Britain that it is an independent country and can be by itself. They earned respect from other countries because of the willingness.
    2. Canada made great sacrifices, and the Canadian army was always willing to fight for the country and they had the reputation as a strong fighting force. Canada earned recognition through this war, and I think this really helped people to see that Canada is worthy.

  5. Canada might have been a country before World War 1 but they were still under the British empire. And it wasn't until World War 1 where Canada showed that they weren't just British lackeys but instead are a force to be reckoned with in the many battles Canada was involved in. And that allowed us to establish ourselves as a more independent Nation and push ourselves out of Britain's shadow.

  6. WW1 Gave Canada it's first real reason to show off it's national pride and band together as a country for the war effort. Canada's success and resilience in the war gave people a reason to be proud and was a major accomplishment for a new country. The war also gave Canada the opportunity to define it's self as a nation. The victory at Vimy set Canadian soldiers apart from the other nations and proved Canada could be resourceful and do stuff on it's own.

  7. Canada was said to become a nation during WW1 after they had earned respect and recognition from their war effort, the other countries learned more about the British Colony and they shocked the world with how hard hitting their troops were. Canadians may have fought under Britain but at the treaty of Versailles, though with some arguments, the country earned a seat at the table.

  8. Canada was controlled by Britain so so its hard to have a sense of nationalism for your country if your fighting for another. so by them saying Canada will be its own nation it gave the men so reason to fight their battles for and with them. Also if Canadian leaders make the call to go to war them the men are fighting for Canada instead of for Britain even if they are fighting along side Britain this way Canadian would be more likely to fight to their deaths. Fighting in the war was also a new accomplishment for Canada as they had never fought in a war prior so when they did they would be remembered as Canadian soldier instead of Britain pons. -S.G

  10. I would say that despite Canada becoming a country in 1867, they became a nation during WW1 because that was the first time they united as a group to fight with one another even though having a small population still showed there power with all the eager members to join and back one another up. Also the Treaty of Versailles was the treaty between Germany and the victorious Allied nation which included Canada, that brought the war to close. Canada didn't get much more than some of the profit Germany was to pay but they did gain enhancement of Canada's national status. This gave Canada more independence by giving them a separate representation at the Assembly of the League of Nations which is another reason why it was said for Canada to become a nation during WW1.

  11. Despite becoming a Country in 1867, Canada had not yet faced something that was quite so powerful as WW1. It required the country to unite in a way that no event prior to this had. The war and the role that Canadian's played also helped to separate Canada from Britain. In other words it helped to showcase the separation and independence that Canada gained as a nation. It is for these reasons that the statement above can be considered true.
