The Road to the Great War


We have talked about the tensions that helped cause World War I:  Economic Rivalry, Weapons Race, Nationalism & the Alliance System. 

We also spoke about the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and how it sparked a series of events leading to war. 

How was this assassination and the events that followed a reflection of at least two of the tensions listed above?

    Archduke Ferdinand was assasinate by a Serbian nationalist because Serbia was tired of being ruled by Austria Hungary. A-H gave serbia the untamatun that if they said sorry they would not declare war. Serbia declined and when A-H attacked serbia the alliance system kicked in and russia came to help serbia defeat A-H. A-H was then helped by germany who they had an alliance with.

    The assassination of archduke created a massive amount of tension and serbia not apologizing for assassinating him started the huge war. The assassination was not the only reason for the tensions, they were also fighting over land and power and weapons. They were tired of all the fighting and the assassination took it over the top and created the war.

    There were tensions in the economic rivalry because everyone was trying to colonize countries so they could boost their trade and make more money, and the when the archduke was assassinated everything just blew up and many of the alliances were put into affect. A-H declared war on Serbia so then France backed them up and Germany backed up A-H and there was a lot of tension between France and Germany so Germany declared war and Russia wasn't happy with Germany so they backed up France so Germany was pretty much surrounded.

    After the assasination Serbia denied the choice of appologizing, so Austria-Hungary declared war. The Arms Race began and the countries were competing who was more advanced weapon wise in order to defeat the opposing. Economic Rivalry was intense at that time because all country leaders knew economic strength was the true foundation

    serbia assassinated that one guy they didnt like being ruled, AH said if they said sorry they wil not declare war. serbia got help from this other country and beat AH =)
