The First World War is often referred to as a futile war with way too many casualties for not much land. So far we have only looked at some aspects of the Western Front, but even in that amount of studying, we have seen several examples of this. What were two examples of this that stand out from what you have seen so far in this unit?
two examples that stand out to me are the fact that more pilots got in injured and died in training then in the war on the lines. the second example is the battle of the Somme. there was a million causalities for only around 10km of land.

ReplyDeleteOne thing that indicated that there were too many casualties compared to the relative gain was the deep digging of trenches in zig zag patterns because they were not gaining much ground, so they had to reinforce their positions and having to engineer a system of minimizing casualties. Another indication of this is that the people involved in the war at the beginning believed it would be over quickly, but the actual length of the war shows that it dragged on without much progress for either side a long time.

over 65,000 Canadian died, benefits of winning the war, don't compare to loved ones who didn't come home. Canada gained brave/ strength rep. uk saw them as a friend. - d.b.
ReplyDeleteTwo Examples are for every man lost only 2 inches of ground were gained, as well as the fact that even in the 1900's the total amount of people who died due to WW1, including civilians and military troops etc., was estimated to be an astounding 40 million.

in the battle of passchendaele only 2" of ground was gained for every single death,so in the long run they were not gaining a significant amount of ground for the lives lost. also, the fact that more pilots died in training/take off and not actual war shows just how rushed and chaotic the war was that led to so many deaths that did not benefit to the war.
